Shivapuri National Park Trek

Shivapuri National Park trek is an ideal option for those who desire comfortable and short treks. This trek is near Kathmandu Valley. Shivapuri, renowned for the watershed and flora and fauna, is the second-highest hill that surrounds the Kathmandu valley.

Shivpuri National Park trek starts from Budhanilkantha and presents to the trekker’s splendid sights of the central and eastern mountain ranges, breathtaking sunrise and sunset and the Nepalese rural life. Normally there are three options to round off the Shivapuri National Park trek; you can either end your trek at Nagarkot or at Dhulikhel. The village of Nagarkot presents spectacular views of the mountain ranges as well as Kathmandu Valley. The advantage of this trek is that it can do throughout the year with each season bringing a different flavor and color to the landscape of the Shivapuri region.

Shivapuri National park is one of the many charming national parks in Nepal. This is the nearest park from the capital city of Kathmandu. This park is quite popular for a short and easy hike. For the trek, we used to carry all the kitchen and camping logistics from Kathmandu valley, but nowadays, the well-managed resorts and lodges are available for the overnights to stay. This park is located in the country’s mid-hills on the northern fringe of the Valley. The park was established National park in 2002AD.

This park is rich in natural beauty and famous for wildlife including Indian leopard, Jungle Cat, Large Indian Civet, Barking Dear, Wild Boar, Rhesus, Monkey, Hanuman Langur, Chinese Pangolin, Crested Porcupine, Himalayan Pika, black naked Hare, Himalayan Squirrel, Fawn-colored Mouse, Brown-toothed Shrew, and the black rat.

The National Park has more than 300 species of birds including more than 100 migratory birds. The most common species of bird species can be seen in the National Park are the white-backed vulture, Himalayan griffon, black vulture, beard vulture, dark kite, hen harrier, goshawk, sparrow hawk, sikhra, common buzzard, Asian black eagle, steppe eagle, magpies, kalij pheasant, leafbirds, flycatcher, bushchat, babblers, cuckoos, bulbul, swift, warblers and many more. King cobra, green pit viper, rat snake, skink, lizards, geckos are common reptiles found in Shivapuri National Park. Frogs and toads are common amphibians. The park has more than 100 species of moths and butterflies.

Accommodation during the Shivapuri National Park Trek

Shivapuri National Park Trek package does not include accommodation in Kathmandu but on request, we are happy to arrange your accommodation in Kathmandu as per your budget and choice. Accommodation in Kathmandu has a wide range of hotels and resorts, especially in Thamel known as a best touristic hub, there are many hotels, guesthouses, lodges, and resorts are available. Please let us know if you want us to arrange your accommodation in Kathmandu.

During the Shivapuri National Park Trek, we will provide the best available lodges on full board (breakfast, lunch, and dinner). On the first day of our hike, we will stay in a beautiful village called Shivapuri Lekh (Baghdwar).  This village has limited lodges and guesthouses, with basic facilities including cozy rooms with attached bathrooms, Internet Wi-Fi, comfortable beds with neat and clean bedsheets and warm blankets.

The lodge’s restaurant serves delicious meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner). The next day, we will hike from Shivapuri Lekh to Dhap via Chisapani Village. Dhap village provides very basic lodges. We will arrange the local best lodges in Dhap village on the full board. On the day third, we will hike from Dhap to Nagarkot, there are many nice and luxury hotels, lodges and guesthouses in Nagarkot village. We will provide one of the best lodges on the full board.

On the day fourth, we will hike from Nagarkot to Dhulikhel, another beautiful and amazing hill station with a wide range of hotels, resorts, and guesthouses. We will provide one of the best guesthouses on the full board. On the day fifth, we will hike from Dhulikhel to Namo Buddha and Panauti and concludes the hike with an hour drive to Kathmandu.

Meals and Drinking Water

During the Shivapuri National Park Trek, the hiking package includes meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) and lodge accommodations. Meals during the hike will be mostly the authentic Nepalese dishes like rice, curry, lentil, vegetable, spicy pickles, curd, plain chapatti and etc. Other cuisines like continental, Tibetan and Indian are also available. These meals will be served as per the menu of the lodge. Besides that, you can buy bars, bread, cookies, and hot chocolates, extra on the trail on your own. In Kathmandu, we will offer a farewell dinner at the end of the trip to celebrate the grand success of your great journey.

Regarding the drinking water, during the Shivapuri National Park Trek, drinking water can be easily found everywhere, every two to three hours you can buy pure and safe drinking water from the local teashops. Also, you can get hot water from the lodge and fill in your bottle every time it gets empty. So, do carry a reusable water bottle with yourself. We request you not to buy mineral water bottles (plastic) on the way as it will help in preserving the nature of this beautiful region. Moreover, you can also carry water purifier tablets or SteriPen with you to purify the water.

Difficulty and Physical Fitness

Shivapuri National Park Trek is a short and easy hike around the Kathmandu valley. We have organized Shivapuri National Park Trek for the people of varied age differences. Even though it is a short and easy trek, you are required to be in good shape and with professional guidance by our crew, anyone with a reasonably fit health will be able to enjoy Shivapuri National Park Trek. Previous trekking or hiking experience is not required for this trek.

Best Season for the Shivapuri National Park Trek

The best seasons for the Shivapuri National Park Trek are autumn (from September to November) and spring (from mid-March to mid-May). During these seasons, the weather will be warm and clear with spectacular views. If you want to avoid the rush time and crowds then winter (December to February) will be an ideal time to go on this trek. Monsoon season (June to Aug) makes everything unclear and slippery.

How much luggage can I take during the Shivapuri National Park Trek?

Since the trek is quite easy and short, it is not necessary to bring a lot of things for this trek and since the lodges during the trek provide good rooms with warm enough blankets, it is not necessary to bring a sleeping bag. The weight limit for your hiking pack is 10 kg per trekker, if you are two trekkers there will be one porter from our company and our porter will carry both of your luggage that should be 20kg max. You can carry your daypack on your own, that should be around 5 kg. On your day-pack please only carry what are essentials for the hike such as camera, water bottles, and other valuable belongings. You can leave your unnecessary stuff either at your hotel in Kathmandu or at the Alpine Eco Trek store for free and it will be completely safe. Our leader will recheck everything (Luggage, equipment, etc.) in our briefing time one day before the trip departure.

Gears for the Shivapuri National Park Trek

This is a short and easy trek in Nepal, also the nearest destination from the capital city of Kathmandu valley so that you do not need to bring any special gear from home for this trek. We at Alpine Eco Trek recommend you to arrange a pair of walking shoes (sports will be fine), trousers, socks, one warm jacket, t-shirts and a long-sleeved shirt, Sunscreen, small backpack, torch (flashlight), Camera, memory card and battery charger( spare batteries) and one quick-drying towel.

Trek from Shivapuri (2,523m.) to Dhap via Chisapani takes about five hours. The mountains greet us from northern side (left side) and hike slowly to gain the altitude. The summit of the hill welcomes us with the fascinating sight. From here the way through forest and 3 hours flat trail lead us to Chisapani. The route we follow is quite smooth and we can observe the numerous green hills and villages at some distance. Moreover, head along the path through forests where we can enjoy the chirping of birds. Dhap is an uncultivated field surrounded by beautiful forests. Overnight stay at camp or local lodge.

Trek from Dhap to Nagarkot takes approximately five and half hours. The trek to Chauki Bhanjag takes about 2 and half hours. Continue the charming trails leading us toward Nagarkot. Nagarkot, (2,175m) is by far one of the most popular destination. In the clear weather the Himalaya range, stretching from Dhaulagiri in the west all the way past Everest to Kanchenjunga in the east, emerges from the darkness to greet the happy visitor with its awe inspiring majesty and beauty. An interesting trail takes us to the hill retreat of Nagarkot, perched on a ridge 32 km east of Kathmandu. It commands sweeping views of the Himalayas. Five of the world's ten highest peaks, Everest, Lhotse, Cho oyu, Makalu and Manaslu are visible from here. Nagarkot is also a popular spot to watch sunrise and sunset. The snow peaks look especially gorgeous during sunset and sunrise. Nagarkot, surrounded by terraced hillsides and picturesque farm houses, the hilltop resort is the epitome of an idyllic escape – with only the wind and the sound of rustling leaves to disturb us. Trek from Nagarkot to Dhulikhel takes about six hours. After we have our share of experiencing the magic of Nagarkot, we are guided along the hiking trails to Dhulikhel. As we approach Dhulikhel, a plethora of cultural diversities, interesting traditional practices, lush vegetation and rich birdlife unfolds before us. Overnight stay at hotel.

Trek from Dhulikhel to Namo Buddha-Panauti takes approximately four and half hours and drive from Panauti to Kathmandu takes us about one and half hours. From Dhulikhel, the trail climbs up to the Kali Mandir, a temple dedicated to Goddess Kali. From there the trail drops down to the village of Kavre and past a line of shops and tea houses. It then climbs again through pine woods past Phulbari and up and down a couple of more hills before we reach the hill of NamoBuddha. Namobouddha situated at an elevation of 1,750m is very important Buddhist Pilgrimage located in Kavre District about 38 km east of Kathmandu. Overnight stay at hotel.

Do I need Insurance for the Shivapuri National Park Trek?

Since the journey is easy, short and easy road access, it is not mandatory to have travel insurance for the Shivapuri National Park trek but traveling is an investment and we believe that insurance makes your investment secure.
