Guide and Staff Arrangements
At Alpine Eco Trek we have an enthusiastic and exciting team ready to guide you through these incredible Himalayas, and here are our guide and staff arrangements. Believing in sustainable tourism and helping the economy of the local regions we hire local guides and porters that have undergone several professional trainings in order to provide you with the best experience. Our trekking guides have completed the following training:
- Intensive Wilderness First Aid Training
- General Trekking Guide Training
- Eco Trekking Workshop and Adventure Meet Training
- Conservation and Biodiversity Training
- Rock and Ice Climbing and Mountaineering Training (Expedition Guide Leaders)
With these skills in place, our guides at Alpine Eco Trek have a vast knowledge of the local history, geography, and the accompanying fauna and flora. Want to meet our incredible team? Have a look at Our Team’s Page.
Porters are the superheroes of the Himalayas, and sadly this job is greatly undervalued, but not at Alpine Eco Trek. With us, we provide the necessary Porter’s Care programs to help these incredible heroes making sure that your trekking luggage and equipment get from A to B. Supporting the IPPG or the International Porter Protection Group we provide the right footwear, shelter, and clothing our porters need. Our porters are insured and get the medical care they need in case of emergencies and by limiting the luggage to 15kg or 33 pounds per trekker these heroes don’t get additional difficulties during your trek. Alpine Eco Trek provides a fair wage and treatment of all our porters and this in turn keeps everybody motivated to their respective jobs well.
With trekking comes the necessary environmental concerns and we at Alpine Eco Trek-like to keep is Green and Clean. While trekking through the Everest region is amazing it’s also becoming more and more fragile as more trekkers descend upon its amazing trekking trails and leave it not always as clean as it was. Alpine Eco Trek works strongly alongside KEEP, the Kathmandu Environmental Education Project, and employs a Zero Impact policy to help preserve the natural environment and the local communities of all our trekking places, as so we prepare a list do’s and don’ts for our trekkers.
Travel insurance is an absolute must if you want to enjoy any type of trek with Alpine Eco Trek. Our trekkers need to make sure to be fully medically insured before undergoing a trek as accidents and medical issues can occur when you go trekking in high altitudes. Make sure that you are at least insured for air ambulance, rescue helicopter, and treatment costs, this way you are fully protected and can take part in this exciting trek without any worries. Please do note that unfortunately Alpine Eco Trek cannot arrange or sell any type of insurance policies and we do recommend all our trekkers to get the insurance from their respective countries or through a reliable online insurance seller and send us a copy during your booking.
With the high altitude, trekking comes also acclimatization. During Alpine Eco Trek’s Everest Base Camp Luxury trek 18 days a carefully planned itinerary is organized with the necessary acclimatization days planned. As you trek above 5000m the oxygen becomes less and it’s crucial to take the proper steps to avoid AMS, Acute Mountain Sickness. AMS is not to take lightly as there are cases where it ended up in serious illness and in some cases even death. Trekkers with previous lung or heart diseases are recommended to discuss our itinerary with your doctor before departing or even booking this trek. Prevention is better than cure as they say, and with Alpine Eco trek your safety is our main priority during any type of trek in Nepal. Common symptoms of AMS are frequent fatigue, stomach pains, lightheadedness, loss of appetite, and fever. Our guides are professionally trained to deal with AMS but they are not doctors as so during the trek if you might feel any of these symptoms you are required to report to your trekking guide so that they may take the necessary steps to help you further acclimatize and successfully finish your trek.
Health Conditions and Experience Requirements
Trekking the Everest Base Camp Luxury trek of 18 days doesn’t come with special health conditions and experience requirements. This amazing trek in Nepal can be done by novice trekkers, just make sure you got the determination and good attitude to see it through. Hiking through the Himalayas for an average of 4 to 7 hours a day carrying your own personal backpack, and on some days 8 to 9 hours can be strenuous for some but our expert team is there to guide you every step of the way. Alpine Eco Trek does recommend building up your stamina a few weeks prior to your departure to Nepal, this in turn will help you enjoy more of this incredible trek to Everest Base Camp.
A great way to build up your stamina is by jogging, gym fitness, or even hiking to higher elevations. Those with pre hiking or trekking experience will have it a bit easier than others but as no technical skills are required, this trek can be completed by young and old. For those with medical conditions such as lung, blood, or heart conditions are required to inform us during your booking so that we can take the required steps to ensure your safety. We do recommend to consult with your doctor before heading out and ask advice about AMS Acute Mountain Sickness.
Best Time to Travel
The best time to travel to Everest Base Camp would be either in autumn or in the spring season. Autumn stretching from mid-September to mid-December offers some incredible views during the Everest Base Camp Luxury trek, the air is nice and cool and the sky is as clear as can be. Ideal for mountain spotting. During the spring season which goes from March to May, the weather is a lot warmer and the days are sunny. With more vegetation in bloom, this time can be one of the best times to travel to EBC. While the route to Everest Base Camp can be done all year long, Alpine Eco Trek does recommend either booking during the autumn or spring seasons. Trekkers that like to come during the summer, June to July will face heavy downpours of rain. But the flora is in full bloom and for those who practice, botany will have the time of their life inspecting those special Himalayan flowers and plants.
The winter season starting from December and ending in February is also a good time to trek to Everest Base Camp but the weather will be cold and snow blizzards can occur blocking of the view, but non the less an adventure in itself. The autumn and spring seasons are considered the high seasons and trekking trails can get packed, while there is safety in numbers those who like to enjoy more privacy and nature we do recommend coming in the winter or the early summer.
What to pack for the EBC Luxury Trek
Many trekkers are wondering what to pack for the EBC Luxury trek, and while you get the luxury of having a porter for support, you need to carry your own daypack. Standard gear that you need for the Everest Base Camp Luxury trek are; rain jacket, fleece, some sunblock, water purification, and drinking bottle, trekking poles, and a small first aid kit. Snacks can be bought on the way and it’s a great way to provide some economical support to the local communities. Of course, don’t forget to pack your camera to document your journey for a lifetime of memories. Depending on which season you trek to EBC, during the winter it’s best to pack some warm gloves and hats.
Flight delay in Kathmandu and Lukla
Ranked as one of the most exciting airports in the world, Lukla Airport is the gateway to Everest Base Camp. Due to its peculiar location, it happens more than often that flights are delayed or sometimes even canceled in Kathmandu or Lukla. Situated on a small valley up in the mountains the Lukla Airport is subject to the weather conditions that can change within an hour. Because of this, the flight delay in Kathmandu and Lukla happens, we do advise all trekkers planning to head to Everest Base Camp by flight to book an additional day on their vacation to anticipate this. The Reliable Twin Otter and Dornier planes bring you from one airport to another in the correct weather conditions. For those on a tighter schedule if a cancelation or flight delay to Lukla or from occurs Alpine Eco Trek can arrange helicopter transport. This way you are on time back for your international flight connection at the end of the Everest Base Camp Luxury Trek.
Helicopter charter is a great way to still be on time as per your schedule but additional charges will apply. These roughly vary upon the season and can be between 2400USD to 2800USD per helicopter. With a seat capacity of 4 to 5 persons, these costs can be shared. Depending on your travel insurance policy it’s even possible to later recuperate the cost back from your insurance. Alpine Eco Trek is more than happy to provide the necessary documents for such claims but the cost firstly needs to be paid by yourself either during or before the flight. This can be done by either cash in USD or by Visa such as MasterCard, Visa Card, or American Express. Make a note that for card payments 4 percent will be added as the bank transfer charge.
As per the rules of the Nepalese Civil Aviation, there are limits set upon the visibility range that allows planes or helicopters to fly to and from Lukla Airport.
- Twin Otters and Dornier planes are allowed to take flight if the visibility is higher than 5000m
- Helicopters are allowed to take flight if the visibility is higher than 1500m
If the visibility is less than 1500m than our office will arrange your flight for the next day, hence the suggestion to book some additional days on your vacation, if the weather is persistent and doesn’t clear up than Alpine Eco Trek can arrange a different package for you according to the valued paid. Although not planned we would like you to still enjoy the best that Nepal has the offer.
