What to Wear during the Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour?

Since you won’t be trekking and don’t need numerous gear, clothes, etc. You might want to bring a back bag with some useful things! Flying by helicopter from Kathmandu to Everest means you’ll be switching climates in a short time. From the more hot and temperate Kathmandu to the cold and windy barren Himalayas. The question would be, what should you bring or wear during the Helicopter Landing tour to Everest Base Camp? Here is a list of things you might want to bring or wear with you during the helicopter tour to Everest:

  • You’ll want to be prepared for the cold and wear an extra set of warm cloths
  • Up high the sun’s UV radiation is on a different level, be sure to pack sunglasses, sunscreen, and lip balm
  • You’ll want to protect your head and hands from the elements, bring a woolen hat, a neck shawl, and gloves
  • You could also pack a bottle of hot water, and some snacks such as dried fruits, nuts, or energy bars

You’ll be spending some time at Pheriche, (4,371m/14,340ft). Not at the village but at an open landing zone in between the Himalayas. During this time you can roam around and check out the views before flying further to Kala Patthar. Both places (depending on the season) can be very windy. So be prepared and know what you should bring or carry during the Everest Base Camp Helicopter Landing tour.

Conditions that need to be met for the Helicopter Tour to EBC

Helicopters have their weight limits, versus the altitude they need to fly. For example, the higher you fly the less carrying weight is required. There are a few conditions that need to be met for the Helicopter tour to Everest Base Camp (EBC). All of our helicopters can fit a max of 5 passengers. The total weight capacity cannot exceed 500kgs/1,102lbs. Helicopter flights to Everest Base Camp carrying 3 passengers can fly directly to Everest Base Camp’s Kala Patthar but 5 passenger flights need to make a stop at Pheriche.

At altitudes above 4,000m/13,123ft the weight limit for flying a helicopter to Everest Base Camp changes to a max 250kg/551lbs. This means the helicopter will make a stop at Pheriche and fly in 2 turns to Kala Patthar. During this time you’ll be able to spend some time at Pheriche checking out the views of Mt Ama Dablam, Mt Kangtega, and Mt Thamserku. So, in short, these are the conditions required for flying by helicopter to Everest:

  • Per helicopter up to 5 passengers and 1 pilot
  • Maximum weight limit up to 4,000m/13,123ft is 500kgs/1,102lbs (Stops at Pheriche)
  • Maximum weight limit above 4,000m/13,123ft is 250kg/551lbs (Flies directly to Kala Patthar)
  • The average recommended weight per passenger should be ±80kg/176lbs

If you are over the average recommended weight per passenger, you can still fly to Everest Base Camp by helicopter as these are averages and your co-passengers weights will help equalize it to be capable to fly.

Best Time for Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour

As mentioned above you can book the Everest Helicopter tour the whole year around. But there are of course the best times of the year to book a chopper flight to Everest Base Camp! Check out our list of months and what you can expect during them:

December to end-February, or the winter season in Nepal:

During winter you can book a helicopter flight to Everest Base Camp. It is possible that the flights will be delayed as blizzards can occur and the weather will be frosty. It is not the best time of the year to book the Everest Base Camp Helicopter tour but doable. Clear views cannot be guaranteed and you can expect cloudy skies. The sky may be clear but more likely that it will snow during the helicopter tour.

March to May, or the spring season in Nepal:

Possibly one of the best times of the year to book the Everest Base Camp Helicopter tour! During this time of the year, the weather will be at its best and you can expect to see amazing Himalayan views with a blue sky in the backdrop! Furthermore, since this is the high season for trekking you get to see lively trekking trails below as you fly by in the helicopter to Everest. The temperature will be warm but winds can occur at Pheriche and Kala Patthar.

June to end-August, or the monsoon/summer season in Nepal:

The worst time of the year that you can book the Everest Base Camp Helicopter tour! As you can expect of an Asian monsoon season, this time of the year is when it pours in Nepal. Massive cubic meters of rainfall causing delays in flights, as well as not clear views and possible cancelations! While it is possible to fly to Everest Base Camp by helicopter during the summer we highly discourage it. With dark and grey skies, possible icy rain, and cold winds blowing you don’t want to book a helicopter flight during this time of the year.

September to November, or the fall/autumn season in Nepal:

The other best time of the year to book a helicopter tour to Everest Base Camp with landing is during the fall/autumn season. Also known as the high season for trekkers in Nepal you expect lively scenes below of numerous trekkers challenging the Himalayas and making their way up the trail to Everest and back.

During the helicopter flight to Everest in the fall/autumn season you can expect some of the best views of the year. With clear skies, you’ll be able to see far and wide and catch all the peaks and mountains of the Everest Himalayas! The weather will be a bit cooler as compared to the spring season but still pleasant.

So, in short, the best times or seasons to book the Everest Base Camp Helicopter Landing tour is during the spring or fall/autumn season of Nepal. Do not book during the summer, if you do not want to face any delays or bad weather.

Skip trekking back to Lukla and book your helicopter flight ticket from Gokyo direct back to Kathmandu. As a famous highlight during the Gokyo Lake trek, it can be strenuous for some to trek back. So, why not fly back in style? After all, you’ll save a great number of days trekking back as well as save some time on your vacation.

This helicopter trip from Gokyo flies over the Khumbu or Everest region directly back to Lukla. After refueling here the helicopter takes off again and flies straight back to Kathmandu. All in a day! Fly from Gokyo back by helicopter, and see some incredible Himalayan views as you fly through the mountains with the eagles.

Epic helicopter tour to Mount Everest base camp

We did not have time to watch the movie Wait for the wind and we embarked on a trip to Nepal. We took a helicopter to Mount Everest base camp, paragliding in Pokhara, learn the history at Durbar Square, watched the snow mountain sunrise, all the arrangements were made by Ram Kumar, the owner of Alpine Eco Trek. It was very comfortable, harvesting happiness and beauty all the way. Looking forward to the next time he takes us to hike. We loved Nepal, we will come again, wait for us.
