Langtang Kyanjin Gompa Trek

Langtang Kyanjin Gompa Trek is a truly classic trek in the Langtang region that offers awe-inspiring mountain peaks, beautiful glacial lakes, and the friendly Tamang and Sherpa villages. This trek is popular among adventure trekkers and Kyanjin Gompa is a high alpine village with a cheese factory and vantage point to try climbing some trekker’s peaks. Langtang valley situated at the south of the Tibetan border is sandwiched between the main Himalayan range to the north and a slightly lower range of snow-capped peaks to the south. The valley provides majestic views of Langtang Lirung (7246m) Gang Chhenpo (6388m), Naya Kanga Ri (5846m) and Dorje Lakpa (6966m).

Langtang Kyanjin Gompa Trek starts from Kathmandu with a scenic and zigzag drive along the Trisuli River to Dhunche and finally reaches Syabrubensi, a Tibetan Sherpa village and terrace farming lands of the people. Once this route was an important trading route with Tibet, therefore, most of the villagers and people here still are involved in the trade. On our route, we can have a trek through Langtang National Park as which is located at the very edge of the Park. We also have a chance to see some wild animals and birds. Among them are the monkeys, musk deer, Pika and the national bird of Nepal, the colorful Danphe.

While continuing our trek to Kyangjin Gompa, we cross many rivers along a gorge and walk through oak and rhododendron forests and glacial moraines. We can have two nights in Gompa and try climbing some trekkers’ peaks. We also visit a yak cheese factory and have a view of the glaciers, which is also a gateway to Tibet. We trek back to Syabrubesi and drive on the same Zigzag road to Kathmandu.

As we enter Syabru, we descend to the ridgeline that separates the Langtang Khola from the Trisuli River. Syabru is a beautiful village stretched out along the ridgeline. We will continue through the village to our campsite about fifteen minutes beyond on the slopes below the village. The sunset is magnificent; brilliantly backlighting the houses perched on the ridgeline above. From here we can enjoy spectacular view of Lantang Lirung (7245m) and Tibetan Himalayan ranges. As we continue climbing there are occasional glimpses of Langtang Lirung between the trees. At Ghora Tabela (3,000m), the trail emerges from the forest. While walking here, we can catch a glimpse of white monkeys and local birds. Once there was a Tibetan resettlement project here, but now it is a Nepalese army post though it has no permanent inhabitants. The trail continues to climb gently and the valley widens, passing a few temporary settlements used by herders who bring their livestock to graze in the high pastures during the summer months. There is a monastery which we can visit shortly before arriving at the village of Langtang, the headquarters of the Langtang National Park. The houses of Langtang and its neighboring villages are of the flat-roofed Tibetan style, surrounded by stone walls enclosing fields of buckwheat, potatoes, wheat, turnips and barley. Overnight at a lodge.
