The Nagarkot Changunarayan hike is a brilliant short trek in the outskirt of Kathmandu valley. If you wish to do a short holiday trip to Nepal then this hiking trip is the best option to explore the beauty of Nepal. It is amazing to see how the villages along the trail still exhibits countryside lifestyle of Nepal even though it is so close from the city. The best of all is the Himalaya in the backdrop of all these natural settings.

Nagarkot hill town, at the altitude of 2,100 meters is the popular hill station in the suburb of Kathmandu Valley. It is 35 km away from the capital city Kathmandu. The sunrise and sunset view from Nagarkot is magnificent. You can plan a night's halt in Nagarkot. On the way back, explore Bhaktapur, the medieval city and one of the 7 world heritage sites is on the way. Here you can discover the Newari architecture, culture and lifestyle wandering through the maze like alleyways of Bhaktapur. This is known as living museum as it still exhibits the medieval look and lifestyle of the people. Majority of the people are farmer and the city is self sufficient. You can see old women weaving their traditional textile, pottery, handmade paper production, wood carving, Thanka Painting and metal sculpting. There are hundreds of monumental buildings around Bhaktapur. Some of them are rented with its latticed window and balcony looking at historical buildings or the tallest temple.

Changunarayan Temple is the oldest pagoda style temple in Nepal. It is believed that the area hosted an early settlement when Kathmandu valley was a lake. In the premises of temple exists fine stone sculptures, all over 1,000 years old. These idols are masterpieces of stone sculptures and are praised by experts from all over the world. This is also known as open museum. The temple is dedicated to Hundu God Bishnu and is a perfect example of Nepalese Pagoda Style temple. The site is listed by UNESCO as World Heritage Site.

Nagarkot Changunarayan hike – itinerary

Day 01: Arrival at the Kathmandu Airport
Upon your arrival at Kathmandu airport, you may have some excellent views of snowy Himalayan peaks. After arrival and customs clearance you'll be met by one of our tour coordinators and transferred to your hotel. overnight at hotel.

Day 02: Sightseeing in Kathmandu Valley
Morning breakfast at hotel; enjoy a sightseeing tour of Kathmandu's Durbar Square, situated in the heart of the city. This entire royal palace complex is filled with historical monuments. See the stone statue of Hanuman and the palace's golden gate. Visit the Taleju temple, at 36.6 meters high, the temple to Lord Krishna, built in the 17th century, and the Jaggannath temple, famous for its erotic art.

The Swayambhu Nath stupa is situated on a hill, and from this point you'll have incredible views of the Kathmandu valley and the Himalayan range. Visit the Pasupatinath temple, an important Hindu shrine. You'll also stop at the Boudhananth stupa, the largest in South Asia. Overnight at hotel.

Day 03: Trek to Nagarkot.
Morning drive from Kathmandu to Sankhu takes approximately one hour and trek from Sankhu to Nagarkot takes about three and half hours. Overnight stay at hotel.

Day 04: Trek to Changunarayan.
Morning breakfast at hotel, we start trekking from Nagarkot to Changunarayan takes approximately three and half hours and drive from Changunarayan to Kathmandu takes about one and half hours. The most popular walk leads down from Nagarkot along a ridge to the temple of Changunarayan-with views of Sankhu village to the right and Bhaktapur to the left. Changunarayan is situated at the end of a long ridge which runs well into the valley. It is said to have been built in 323 AD by King Hari Datta Varma. The temple is richly decorated with sculptures and carvings. It is said to be the oldest temple in the valley. After excursion in and around Changunarayan you board the vehicle to get back to Kathmandu. Overnight at hotel.

Day 05: Final departure.
Transfer to airport for your final flight back to home.

Visa for Nepal, you can obtain a visa easily upon your arrival at Tribhuwan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu. Please kindly bring two passport size photos and passport copy along with you. (Tourist Visa with Multiple Entry for 30 days can be obtained by paying US $ 40 or equivalent foreign currency. Similarly, Tourist Visa with Multiple Entry for 90 days can be obtained by paying US $ 100.
